Nirgundi Leaves is a large aromatic shrub commonly found in the warmer regions of India. In traditional Indian medicine, it is known as Sarvaroganivarani, meaning “a remedy for all ailments.”

Nirgundi may help in managing diabetes by improving insulin levels, thanks to its antioxidant properties. It also helps control inflammation by blocking the action of certain inflammatory compounds due to its anti-inflammatory nature.
According to Ayurveda, consuming Nirgundi powder twice a day or applying its paste to the affected area can help manage arthritis and relieve pain because of its Vata-balancing qualities. The root powder of Nirgundi may also be useful in piles, as it helps soothe irritated and inflamed tissues.

Nirgundi is also known to support hair health. Massaging the scalp with oil made from Nirgundi leaves mixed with sesame oil may help reduce premature greying and treat scalp infections.

In some cases, Nirgundi may cause mild stomach discomfort or skin rashes.

Nirgundi Leaves is a Sanskrit word that literally means “that which protects the body from ailments.” It is a potent and versatile herb widely used in Ayurvedic medicine for treating various health conditions. Nirgundi is derived from the aromatic shrub Vitex negundo, which is known for its bitter, pungent, and astringent taste. The plant bears rose-colored flowers and small brown fruits that are commonly used for medicinal purposes.

Medicinal Uses and Applications

Nirgundi Leaves is a multipurpose herb used both externally and internally.

  • For external use, it is applied in the form of oil, ointment, or paste.

  • For internal use, it is consumed as powder, leaf juice extract, or decoction (water infusion).

Thanks to its analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antihistamine properties, Nirgundi is beneficial in managing:

  • Fever

  • Arthritis and joint pain

  • Headaches

  • Swelling and inflammation

  • Digestive issues

  • Oral and gum problems

  • Sleep disturbances (due to its mild sedative and muscle-relaxing effects)

Varieties

There are two main botanical varieties based on flower color:

  • Blue-flowered variety: Vitex negundo – traditionally known as Nirgundi

  • White-flowered variety: Vitex trifolia – also known as Siduwar

Active Compounds

Nirgundi Leaves is rich in biologically active constituents, including:

  • Alkaloids: Vitricine

  • Sterols: β-sitosterol

  • Phenols and Terpenes: Camphene, onoterpenes

  • Flavonoids: Casticin, chryso-splenol, orientin, vitexin, chrysoplenol D

  • Other Compounds: Dulcitol, anguside, eurostoside, aucubin

These compounds contribute to its anti-histamine, muscle relaxant, and mild analgesic effects, helping to promote natural and restful sleep.

Benefits of Nirgundi Leaves :-

1. Rheumatoid Arthritis (Amavata)
Rheumatoid arthritis, known as Amavata in Ayurveda, occurs due to the imbalance of Vata dosha and the accumulation of Ama (toxins from poor digestion) in the joints. Nirgundi helps manage Amavata due to its Vata-balancing and Ushna (hot) properties. It boosts digestive fire, improves digestion, and prevents the formation and buildup of Ama, thereby relieving joint pain and stiffness.

2. Cough
Cough is often a result of Kapha imbalance, leading to mucus accumulation in the respiratory tract. Nirgundi, with its Kapha-balancing and Ushna properties, helps loosen and expel mucus, providing relief from persistent cough.

3. Epilepsy (Apasmara)
In Ayurveda, epilepsy is called Apasmara and involves an imbalance of all three doshas, especially Vata, which affects the nervous system. Nirgundi helps manage epilepsy due to its Vata-balancing and Medhya (brain tonic) properties. It helps relax the nerves and may reduce the frequency of seizures.

4. Arthritic Pain
Pain in the joints due to Osteoarthritis or Rheumatoid Arthritis is primarily linked to Vata aggravation. Applying a paste made from Nirgundi leaves on the affected area may provide relief from pain and inflammation due to its Vata-pacifying action.

5. Premature Greying of Hair
Premature greying is often associated with Kapha dosha imbalance. Nirgundi oil, when applied to the scalp, helps balance Kapha and acts as a Keshya (hair tonic). It may prevent premature greying and support overall hair health.
