Chavak is a smooth, fleshy climbing plant mainly grown in Southern India for its fruit, which is usually dried and used as a spice or seasoning. The fruit of Piper retrofractum looks and tastes similar to Long Pepper (Piper longum). The plant has thin climbing stems about 3–4 mm thick. Its leaves are smooth, long and narrow, with pointed tips and uneven bases, measuring about 10–12 cm in length and 3–3.5 cm in width.
