Kher chhal, also known as Khadir or Khair, is a medium-sized, thorny, deciduous tree that can grow up to 13 meters in height. The leaves are bipinnately compound, with 30–50 pairs of small leaflets. The main rachis is pubescent and features a large, noticeable gland at its center.
The tree bears pale yellow, sessile flowers arranged in axillary spikes. Its fruit appears as flat brown pods, narrowed at the base and ending in a triangular beak, with a smooth and shiny surface.
The wood of the Kher tree is dense and extremely hard—often compared to bones in strength. Traditionally, Kher chhal is considered sacred and is commonly used in religious practices such as Yajna, Havan, and Puja. It is one of the nine sacred timbers (Navagraha woods) used for ritualistic purposes in Hinduism.
