It is a small evergreen tree, reaching heights of 6-9 meters, commonly found in the wild along streams or in the shade of evergreen forests. It is distributed almost throughout India, particularly in the central and eastern Himalayas, as well as in the Khasi, Garo, and Lushai hills, and the Andaman Islands. This Indian jadi booti is pure and natural.

The plant is revered as one of the most sacred trees in Hinduism and Buddhism. Ashoka is characterized by its bitter and astringent taste, possessing hemostatic properties. The powdered bark of Ashoka is androgenic in nature. The bark extract contains two active principles: one that stimulates plain muscle and another that relaxes plain muscle. It stimulates the uterus and is beneficial in treating uterine bleeding, leucorrhoea, bleeding piles, and diarrhea with bleeding.
