Karanja (botanical name: Millettia pinnata) is a tree from the pea family (Fabaceae). It mainly grows in Asia and is also found in Australia, Pacific Islands, Japan, and Thailand. This powerful tree is valued in both Ayurveda and modern medicine for its healing properties, especially in treating serious skin allergies and diseases.
In Ayurveda, different parts of the Karanja tree—like its leaves, stems, fruits, roots, and seeds—are used in various herbal remedies. Though it has a pungent taste, it is easy to digest and is known to have a slightly hot potency, making it more effective than many other herbs.
Traditionally, Karanj Beej twigs were used as natural toothbrushes because they help maintain good dental health.
Apart from its medicinal uses, Karanja also plays an important role in Ayurvedic therapy. In a treatment called bloodletting therapy, it is used to cure skin conditions. When a skin lesion becomes numb and shows no pain or itching, the area is gently rubbed with a Karanja stem to draw out impure blood. This ancient technique is believed to treat the root cause of skin infections and promote healing.
