Kutki (Picrorhiza kurroa) – A Potent Ayurvedic Bitter Herb

Kutki, a powerful and revered herb in Ayurveda, literally means “bitter”—a reflection of its distinctly sharp taste and potent medicinal value. The bitter roots of this herb are widely used to treat a range of ailments, especially those rooted in Pitta and Kapha imbalances.

Known as a “Behdhniya” herb due to its piercing and deep-acting nature, Kutki serves as a natural coolant and is especially effective in managing bleeding disorders such as nasal bleeds, heavy menstruation, and heat-induced conditions.

Kutki is also celebrated for its action on the liver—it acts as a liver stimulant and detoxifier, promoting bile flow and supporting overall liver health. In addition, it is used in the management of chronic skin disorders and autoimmune conditions such as psoriasis and vitiligo.
