Primary focus
Dīpana (kindles Agni) & Pācana (assimilates Āma)
Dosha action
Pacifies Kapha & Vāta (both forms)

1. General botanical profile

Classical heritage: Zingiber officinale Rosc. holds an unparalleled position as the premier Dīpanīya and Pācanīya agent, celebrated as Mahauṣadham (“Great Medicine”) and Viśvabheṣajam (“Universal Remedy”). It forms one-third of the classical Trikatu formulation alongside Pippalī and Marīca. Ayurveda recognizes two forms based on moisture state: Śuṇṭhī, the dried rhizome — unctuous, light, digestive and bowel-binding (Grāhī); and Ārdraka, the fresh rhizome — penetrating, heavy, dry and bowel-breaking (Bhedana).

Habit & distribution: An erect perennial herb with horizontal, tuberous, branched rootstocks (rhizomes), aromatic and pale yellow-brown. Extensively cultivated throughout India, particularly in the Deccan, Gujarat, Kerala and sub-Himalayan regions.

Foliage: Stems leafy and erect, 0.5–1 m tall. Leaves simple, alternate, linear-lanceolate, 15–30 cm long, with sheathing bases.

Flowers: Borne on long peduncles in dense, oblong spikes; small, with pale yellow petals and a dark purple stamen.

Key synonyms (Śuṇṭhī): Viśvā / Viśvabheṣajam (rapidly penetrates the tissues; a world-famous remedy), Mahauṣadham (the great medicine), Nāgaram (the cultivated form is superior to wild ginger), Ūṣaṇam (mild burning/tingling heat), Katubhadram (most wholesome among pungent substances).

Key synonyms (Ārdraka): Ārdraka / Ārdrikā (remains moist; stimulates salivation), Śṛṅgaveram (shaped like an animal horn, or named for the Śṛṅgaverapura region).

Vernacular names — fresh ginger (Ārdraka): Hindi: Adarakha; Gujarati: Ādū; Marathi: Āle; Bengali: Ādā; Tamil: Inci; Telugu: Allamū; Kannada: Alla; Malayalam: Inci; Oriya: Adā; Punjabi: Adaraka; English: Green Ginger, Ginger Root.

Vernacular names — dried ginger (Śuṇṭhī): Hindi: Soṇṭha; Gujarati: Sūṇṭha; Marathi: Suṇṭha; Bengali: Śuṇṭhi; Tamil: Śukka; Kannada: Hasiśuṇṭhī; English: Dry Ginger.

2. Ingredients & phytochemicals

Key ingredient (part used): Rhizome of ginger (Zingiber officinale Rosc.), used both dried as Śuṇṭhī and fresh as Ārdraka.

Phytochemical profile

  • Volatile essential oil: α-zingiberene, β-zingiberene, ar-curcumene, β-bisabolene, camphene, d-borneol, 1,8-cineole, citral, linalool and zingiberol.
  • Pungent oleoresin principles: Gingerols ([6]-, [8]- and [10]-gingerol), shogaols (formed on thermal dehydration of gingerol), zingerone and paradol.
  • Nutritional & mineral profile: Thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, Vitamin C (6.0 mg/100 g fresh rhizome), calcium (20 mg/100 g), phosphorus (60 mg/100 g), iron (2.6 mg/100 g), and trace iodine and fluorine.
  • Proteolytic enzyme activity: A unique protease enzyme; rhizomes showing light blue rings on cross-section exhibit markedly higher protease activity.

The Grāhī vs. Vibhaṇḍa-Bhedinī paradox: Because Śuṇṭhī is rich in the Fire element (Āgneya), it selectively absorbs and dries excess watery fluid (Toyāṁśa) in intestinal waste without forcibly eliminating solid feces. It breaks gas accumulation (Vibhaṇḍa) while binding loose stool (Grāhī) — ideal for IBS, diarrhea and Āma conditions.

4. Karma & therapeutic applications

Indications for Śuṇṭhī (dry ginger)

  • Rheumatoid & metabolic disorders (Āmavāta): Clears metabolic sludge (Āma) and joint pain. Śuṇṭhī powder mixed with ghee is formed into a bolus, wrapped in castor leaves, baked by the Puṭapāka method, and taken with jaggery each morning.
  • Respiratory & vocal care: Relieves cough (Kāsa) and asthma/dyspnea (Śvāsa), and restores voice clarity (Svarya).
  • Abdominal & cardiac care: Relieves colic (Śūla), flatulence (Ānāha), hemorrhoids (Arśas), edema (Śotha), filariasis (Ślīpada) and cardiac discomfort from trapped gas (Hṛdroga).
  • External application: A warm paste applied to the forehead relieves cold, headache and sinusitis.
  • Adjuvant in purgation: Taken alongside purgative formulations to prevent nausea, intestinal gripping and tenesmus.

Indications & rituals for Ārdraka (fresh ginger)

  • Pre-meal ritual (Lavaṇārdraka): Chewing a slice of fresh ginger with rock salt before meals stimulates Agni, enhances taste and clears mucus from the tongue and throat.
  • Nausea & emesis: Fresh Ārdraka juice with equal parts Tulsī juice, a little honey and burnt peacock-feather ash is a well-known remedy for severe vomiting.
  • Respiratory distress: Fresh juice with honey serves as an effective vehicle (Anupāna) in cough, dyspnea and Kapha disorders.
  • Edema & ascites: Administered in gradually increasing and then decreasing doses for ascites and generalized edema (Anasarca).

Pharmacological actions reported in modern studies

  • Anti-inflammatory & prostaglandin inhibition: [6]-gingerol, [6]-shogaol and dehydrogingerdiones inhibit prostaglandin biosynthesis, supporting the classical use in Āmavāta (rheumatoid arthritis).
  • Antioxidant & rancidity prevention: Shogaol and zingerone prevent lipid oxidation with potency comparable to allyl sulfides; used in edible fats to prevent oxidative rancidity.
  • Cardiovascular & vasomotor stimulation: Alcoholic extracts stimulate heart function and the vasomotor/respiratory centers.
  • Antihistaminic & antidepressant: Demonstrates antihistaminic action, central antidepressant effects and anti-narcotic properties.
  • Culinary deodorant: Highly effective at suppressing fishy and pungent food odors.

5. Contraindications & precautions

Śuṇṭhī is generally well tolerated owing to its unctuous (Snigdha) nature. Fresh Ārdraka, being sharp (Tīkṣṇa) and dry (Rūkṣa), is explicitly contraindicated in the following states and seasons:

  • Skin & blood disorders: Skin diseases (Kuṣṭha), anemia (Pāṇḍu), active bleeding disorders (Raktapitta) and open ulcers (Vraṇa).
  • Inflammatory & hot states: Dysuria (Mūtrakṛcchra), high fever (Jvara) and burning sensations (Dāha).
  • Renal & cardiac cautions: Fresh juice is reported harmful in severe cardiac and renal disorders.
  • Seasonal restrictions: Should not be taken routinely during Summer (Nidāgha) and Autumn (Śarad), owing to environmental Pitta aggravation.

6. Dosage & method of administration

  • Śuṇṭhī Cūrṇa (dry powder): 250 mg to 1 gram daily.
  • Śuṇṭhī hot infusion / decoction: 30 to 50 mL taken at bedtime for chronic arthritis.
  • Ārdraka Svarasa (fresh juice): ½ to 2 teaspoonfuls (2.5 to 10 mL) daily.
  • Classical formulations: Essential constituent of Trikatu Cūrṇa, Saubhāgya Śuṇṭhī, Śuṇṭhī Pāka, Dīpanīya decoctions and Pippalyādi Gaṇa.
